At its inception during the Reconstruction era, the Ku Klux Klan was a paramilitary force that largely served the interests of the Democratic Party and white supremacy in the South. While the Democratic Party did not formally create the KKK, the Klan was overwhelmingly composed of white Southern Democrats. Their political alignment was primarily defined by their opposition to the Republican Party, whose Reconstruction policies aimed to protect the civil and political rights of newly freed Black Americans.
